Pretty much every case involving wasp nest removal in Northampton that our team at B-Discreet Pest Control are hired to deal with involve Vespula vulgaris, otherwise known as the Common Wasp. These are classed as social wasps that build large nests and form colonies.
The Common Wasp is found throughout the UK in both urban and rural areas. It is the most common species of wasp in the country and most people will have encountered them before. Their iconic black and yellow striped bodies help to warn other creatures that they are dangerous and to steer clear of them.
Identifying wasp nests
In late spring you will see the much larger queens look for a suitable place to set up a nest. This could be anything from a tree or a bush in your garden to a crack or hole in the wall of your home. She will start the nest building process by creating a cylindrical column called a petiole made from chewed up wood pulp mixed with her saliva.
The queen will continue to build cells around the petiole for the classic hexagonal shape we are familiar with. After building around 20-30 cells, she will lay an egg in each one. The queen will continue building new cells while feeding the hatched larvae.
Once each larva reaches full size, they will seal up the cell and develop into adult worker wasps. Smaller than the queen, these workers are the ones you see later in the summer buzzing around collecting proteins to feed the new larvae back in the nest and sugar to feed themselves, hence their attraction to your sweet food and drinks!
Getting rid of wasps
Each wasps nest may contain anything from 5,000-10,000 individuals, so this is a problem you don’t want to have around close to or within your home.
You should never attempt to DIY a wasp problem yourself! Wasps mostly sting to immobilise their prey, such as garden pests you are happy to see the back of, but they will also sting to defend their nest!
